Applications are invited to join an international research consortium aiming to build a neuronal pacemaker.

Your role in the project will be to develop digital twins of neuronal circuits of the brainstem and train them on electrophysiological data to provide the correct adaptation of pulses delivered to the heart

You will work in close collaboration with a the team 星空体育官网 testing and validating the pacemaker device, project partners, external consultants, and clinicians.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in computational neuroscience to build and train the digital twin of a neuronal pacemaker. You will estimate the network parameters that will configure pacemaker adaptation to physiological feedback. The digital twin model consists of Hodgkin-Huxley type neurons emulating the brainstem central pattern generators that control heart rate adaptation on a beat-to-beat basis. The model will be trained on actual electrophysiological recordings and electrocardiograms to produce the correct timings of pulses delivered to the heart following changes in respiration patterns and oximeter readings. The group has extensive experience in optimizing such models with data assimilation and has demonstrated the importance of adaptive beat-to-beat pacing for reversing cardiorespiratory disease. You will work in close collaboration with the postdoc testing and validating the pacemaker device by configuring its central pattern generator with estimated parameters and assist with coding. You will also collaborate with other team members, project partners, external consultants, and clinicians.

The post calls for a Physics/Computational/Engineering PhD or a closely allied discipline with a good understanding of dynamical systems and proficient at modelling them in C/C++ and Python. Additional experience in inverse problems, AI, neural networks, GUI coding or bioengineering would be a bonus. You will also have good organisational, time management skills, the ability to organise data for publication, and good communication skills to thrive within an interdisciplinary consortium.

The aim of the consortium is to provide much needed therapy for cardiorespiratory disease. By restoring heart rate adaptation and natural heart rate variability, the project will make a significant contribution to extending patients’ lives and improving patients’ quality of life.

The post holder will be a Physics/Computational/Engineering (or closely allied discipline) trained PhD with a good understanding of dynamical systems and proficiency at modelling them in C/C++ and Python.

Additional experience in inverse problems, AI, neural networks, GUI coding or bioengineering would be a bonus as well as good organisational and communication skills.

This is a fixed term role with an expected duration of 3 years.

The Department of Psychology is seeking a skilled and highly motivated part-time (0.6FTE) Research Assistant to support a 3-year Wellbeing of Women funded project exploring the effect of period pain on the lives of adolescent girls and their school engagement.

The project, led by Dr Abbie Jordan, aims to use a mixed-methods approach to understand barriers to school engagement during menstruation in adolescent girls (e.g., stigma, pain characteristics, parent/staff attitudes). This will then inform the development of brief pain management educational sessions for adolescents, parents/carers and school staff to increase support and school engagement for adolescent girls.

There will be several stages to the project:

  1. Hosting interactive workshops at schools to understand period pain beliefs and myths
  2. Interviews with adolescent girls, parent/carers and school staff to explore the impact of period pain on school engagement
  3. Surveys to understand pain management knowledge, attitudes, school engagement, stigma, self-efficacy and pain interference
  4. Synthesising the findings to develop educational sessions on period pain management, and evaluating their success.

The Research Assistant will work with a Post-doctoral Research Associate to support activities relating to the first three stages. This includes assisting with recruitment of schools and participants, scheduling and conducting interviews, and setting up surveys.

The post holder will join Bath’s thriving Centre for Pain Research and they will be encouraged and supported in pursuing career development opportunities. As a member of Research Staff at the 星空体育官网, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

The Department of Psychology is seeking a skilled and highly motivated post-doctoral research associate to lead on a range of innovative projects related to a 5-year £3.5 million Wellcome grant.

The Research Associate will join a collaborative team across 5 institutions (Cardiff University, University of Oxford, University College London, University of Cambridge, University of Jena), including individuals with lived experience and 5 other Research Associates.

The post holder will be encouraged and supported in pursuing career development opportunities.

We welcome applications from candidates who have:

  • A PhD in Cognitive or Clinical Neuroscience, data science / machine learning or related discipline
  • Extensive experience in neuroimaging data analysis ( e.g., structural morphometry using FreeSurfer and voxel-based methods, diffusion tensor imaging, resting state fMRI)
  • Experience and interest in conducting research in psychosis and cognition.

<![CDATA[Research Associate in Battery Systems (KK12520)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=KK12520 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=KK12520 星空体育官网 the role

Are you interested in battery management, degradation, thermal control, or module design? Within the IAAPS research team we are seeking a Research Associate to contribute to the group's work on batteries. You will work on two 3-year European funded projects we are currently in the middle of, supporting the design, development and testing of novel battery packs and battery management solutions.

  • You will be responsible for designing, managing, and analysing test campaigns on battery performance and degradation, including evaluation of cutting-edge technologies.
  • You will need strong experimental and data-analysis skills.
  • A proactive attitude towards setting up and proving out new experimental capabilities is essential.

Within TEMPEST the test campaigns will include evaluating use of alternating current for rapid battery pre-heating, for both ‘wet’ electrolyte and solid-state lithium-ion battery cells. The aim is to confirm the conditions and rates at which this can be used without detrimental effects. This will inform the design of a BMS to these specifications within the project, which will be led by another project partner. Within ENERGETIC you will lead analysis of trends in battery ultrasound data, linking this to changes in SOC and SOH. For both projects you will also coordinate the development and test of a battery module technology demonstrator to showcase the project technologies, drawing on in-house design and technician resource.

TEMPEST and ENERGETIC between them involve 22 partners from across Europe. This is therefore an excellent opportunity for a researcher seeking to grow their professional network.

The successful applicant may be based either at our University campus in Bath, or at the IAAPS Ltd site in north Bristol. In either case many of the experimental facilities are based at IAAPS Ltd, and so travel to the north Bristol site will be required routinely. The position will also require travel to mainland Europe to work with industrial and academic partners to fulfil Bath’s roles on the projects and build new collaborations. The wider IAAPS research community is a thriving group of over 12 academics, 20 post-doctoral researchers and over 70 PhD research students.

A secondary role will be to co-supervise PhD, MSc and undergraduate students undertaking research in the area of electric propulsion systems.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

As a member of Research Staff at the 星空体育官网, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 31 August 2025.

星空体育官网 you

  • hold PhD degree, or an equivalent professional qualification, in a subject area of direct relevance for the project,
  • have previous experience of planning and conducting experimental work, ideally on battery cells, modules or packs,
  • have an understanding of battery performance and degradation pathways,
  • have an interdisciplinary interest in batteries across electrochemistry, materials, electrical engineering and/or mechanical engineering, and are interested in the links between cell-level effects and system performance in applications,
  • have excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills, and are able to maximise contributions from other team members to achieve project goals,
  • are self-motivated and possess project management and technical communication skills.

We expect any members of staff to spend at least 40% of their time employed by the University. If you would like to apply as a job share, you do not need anyone to apply with but please indicate what time commitment you are able to provide.

You will be a kind and culturally aware leader who fosters an environment where every individual is valued and respected, regardless of their background or identity. You will understand that change is inevitable and necessary, actively encouraging your team to adapt and evolve. By promoting a culture of openness and inclusivity, you will create a dynamic and empowered team that can thrive in today's changing world.
